Armenian MP warns Iran unrest could destabilize region

Armenian opposition MP Tigran Abrahamyan has expressed concern over ongoing protests in neighboring Iran and warned against foreign interference.

In a social media post on Saturday, Abrahamyan, secretary of the Pativ Unem faction, said renewed tensions in and around Iran were troubling for Armenia, citing close historical ties between the two peoples and shared regional security concerns.

“Iran is not just a neighbor; it is a country with which the Armenian people have warm, friendly relations,” he wrote.

The MP added that unrest near Armenia’s southern borders could undermine fragile regional stability. “Any instability in southern Armenia can damage the region’s fragile stability and security,” he said.

Abrahamyan also criticized external involvement in Iran’s internal affairs. “Any external interference is unacceptable if it escalates the situation instead of promoting solidarity and internal peace and threatens the interests of a friendly country’s people,” he said.

Violence surrounding protests in Iran sparked by the Islamic Republic’s ailing economy killed two other people, authorities said Saturday, raising the death toll in the demonstrations to at least 10 as they showed no signs of stopping.
