Aleppo clashes injure 15, prompt school closures and flight suspensions

Fighting flared in Syria’s northern city of Aleppo between Syrian government troops and Kurdish-led SDF forces on Tuesday, wounding at least 15 people and prompting authorities to close schools and suspend flights, officials said.

Residents reported shelling and gunfire in several neighborhoods, including Nor Gyugh, Sheikh Taha, Jalaa, Ashrafieh, Sheikh Maqsoud, the Villas district and Suleimaniyeh, according to the local Armenian-language newspaper Kantsasar.

Aleppo’s governor urged residents in affected areas to stay indoors. He said shelling by the SDF in Ashrafieh and Sheikh Maqsoud wounded 15 people, including children and nine officials from the Aleppo agriculture company.

Clashes subsided during the day but later resumed, he added.

Authorities cancelled a memorial ceremony scheduled for Tuesday for security reasons and ordered schools, universities and government offices to close on January 7, citing attacks on hospitals and public facilities.

Flights to and from Aleppo airport were also suspended for 24 hours, the governor said.
