Armenian political analyst says concerns over TRIPP have deepened

Armenian political analyst Suren Surenyants says his concerns over the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) have intensified after reviewing a joint statement outlining its implementation framework, warning that it could undermine Armenia’s sovereignty despite official assurances to the contrary.

Surenyants made the remarks following a meeting in Washington, D.C., between Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, during which the two officials announced the release of the TRIPP Implementation Framework. According to officials, the framework aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation while promoting regional stability and economic development.

“After reading this statement, my reservations about TRIPP became more pronounced. My concerns have deepened,” Surenyants told reporters on Wednesday.

The head of the Democratic Alternative Party said government officials were likely to praise the document, but argued it amounted to an externally driven “concessionary model” that promotes foreign interests.

“Whatever story Ararat Mirzoyan told this morning or whatever Nikol Pashinyan says now, there are still people in this country who can decipher diplomatic documents,” Surenyants said.

He claimed that an initial analysis of the text suggested the frequent use of the terms “sovereignty” and “jurisdiction” was intentional, serving to mask a significant reduction in Armenia’s sovereignty.

“In my view, these terms are used in a declarative way to conceal the real substance of the document,” he said, adding that the repeated emphasis on sovereignty stands in stark contrast to a weakening of Armenia’s international position.

Suryantsyan also referred to comments made last year by former U.S. Ambassador to Armenia John Evans, who said “Washington has bulldozed over Armenia”, arguing that the new framework helped explain those remarks.

“That statement did not come from Russia or from the Armenian opposition,” Suryantsyan said. “It was made by a former U.S. ambassador to Armenia.”
