Health insurance covers only 30% of medical services in Armenia, Pashinyan says

Only around 30% of medical services in Armenia are currently covered by health insurance, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said, noting that coverage focuses on the most in-demand services.

Speaking at a cabinet meeting on Thursday, Health Minister Anahit Avanesyan said that as of 10:00 local time there had been 87,148 registered insurance-funded visits. Of these, 7,739 were outpatient consultations and 8,612 were hospital admissions.

Avanesyan said the growth in usage was in line with expectations and added that some patients were surprised to learn they could receive hospital care without direct payment, as their insurance premiums had been paid by the state.

She also said hospitals were not experiencing long queues.

Pashinyan said the government needed to clearly communicate the scope of coverage, stressing that while insurance does not cover all services, it includes those most frequently used by patients.
