International community keeps 'turning a blind eye' to political prisoners in Armenia, MP says
An Armenian opposition lawmaker has accused the international community of ignoring serious political, security and humanitarian concerns as they praise progress in Armenia–Azerbaijan relations.
In a social media post on Monday, Tigran Abrahamyan, a member of the opposition Pativ Unem faction, argued that the international community fails to address the continued presence of Azerbaijani troops on sovereign Armenian territory, as well as Azerbaijan’s ongoing military build-up and use of pressure tactics.
Abrahamyan also accused international institutions and diplomatic missions, often vocal about democracy and human rights, of disregarding the violations of the rights of displaced Artsakh Armenians.
“They blatantly neglect the abuses against Armenians held in Azerbaijan,” he wrote.
“International organizations and diplomatic missions continue to turn a blind eye to the issue of political prisoners in Armenia, prioritizing their own geopolitical interests,” Abrahamyan stated.
