Armenian MP warns of worsening demographic trends in 2025

Armenia’s key demographic indicators deteriorated sharply in January-November 2025 compared with the same period a year earlier, opposition lawmaker Tadevos Avetisyan said on Tuesday, citing official statistics.

Avetisyan, a member of the Hayastan faction and a senior figure in the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, cited a decline in population vitality, with the ratio of births to deaths falling to 127%, down about 6 percentage points. Natural population growth dropped 18% to 6,228, while births fell 5% to 29,337. The number of deaths was largely unchanged.

Marriages decreased 12% to 12,672, while divorces rose about 3% to 4,419, he said. Infant deaths (ages 0–1) increased 8.5% to 207, and deaths among children aged 0–4 rose 11% to 251.

Avetisyan blamed the trends on antisocial government policies, arguing that living standards have declined for roughly 40% of the population, including pensioners, benefit recipients and working poor. He said worsening social conditions have contributed to fewer marriages, more divorces, higher mortality, including infant mortality, fewer births and increased emigration.
