Yerevan Municipality rules out compensation for pothole damage

Yerevan’s deputy mayor has said the Municipality has no procedure to compensate drivers whose vehicles are damaged by potholes despite widespread complaints following heavy winter conditions.

Armen Pambukhchyan told reporters on Friday that the city used 12,500 tonnes of salt and sand in 2025, two and a half times more than the previous year, because of heavy snowfall. He acknowledged that the treatment contributed to road surface deterioration but insisted that newly asphalted streets remain largely intact.

Asked whether motorists could expect compensation for damage caused by potholes, Pambukhchyan replied: “What is responsible behaviour? Snow fell, we spread salt and potholes appeared. Should the snow have been left uncleared? This is a natural situation. The Municipality has no such compensation mechanism.”

He said repair crews had already filled 200,000 square metres of potholes and invited journalists to inspect the work.
