Armenian opposition MP warns of alarming security trends

Armenian opposition lawmaker Tigran Abrahamyan has issued a warning about troubling developments in the country’s security environment, arguing that scenarios once considered far‑fetched have now become reality.

In a social media post on Tuesday, Abrahamyan, a member of the Pativ Unem faction, criticized the government’s approach to defense and national security, stressing that Azerbaijan’s civil society initiatives are closely tied to its intelligence services. He warned that the next logical step could involve fortified zones and newly acquired weaponry.

Abrahamyan pointed out that the leaders of both countries have received awards celebrating bilateral friendship even as Azerbaijan continues to hold Armenian prisoners and seize Armenian territories. He accused the government of allowing Azerbaijani nationals free access to Armenia while restricting opposition MPs from visiting military units and frontline positions.

Abrahamyan also took aim at the Defense Ministry initiatives, including the reduction of mandatory military service and the release of promotional videos from previously classified facilities.

“What once might have been dismissed as vivid imagination has now become bitter reality,” Abrahamyan wrote.
