Aliyev's remarks confirm continued hostility toward Armenia, MP says

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has accused Armenia of committing genocide, prompting sharp criticism from Armenian opposition MP Tigran Abrahamyan, who described his remarks as evidence of continued hostility toward Armenia.

In a social media post on Friday, Abrahamyan, a member of the Pativ Unem faction, said Aliyev made the accusation while referencing the events in Khojaly and the broader historical grievances between the two countries.

“Following the events in Khojaly and the crimes committed against his own people three decades ago, the Azerbaijani president, seizing the occasion, has accused Armenia of genocide,” Abrahamyan wrote.

He also denounced Aliyev's comments that Armenia, which he described as “the enemy”, should remain fearful, adding that such fear ensured Azerbaijanis could “live peacefully”.

According to the opposition lawmaker, these statements reflect Azerbaijan’s ongoing animosity toward Armenia and the Armenian people.

"Azerbaijan is expanding its resources and capabilities to force Armenians out of their homeland," he added.
