Levon Ter-Petrosyan acting as a 'political patriarch', opposition figure says

First Armenian President Levon Ter-Petrosyan has assumed the role of a “political patriarch” in an effort to unite the opposition against Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, a senior opposition figure says.

In a social media post on Tuesday, Levon Zurabyan, coordinator of Ter-Petrosyan’s Armenian National Congress (ANC), stated that the former president is acting from a supra-party position as the founder of the Third Armenian Republic. “He is trying to ensure opposition consolidation to remove Nikol Pashinyan from power,” he wrote.

According to Zurabyan, opposition unity is essential to tackling the challenges facing the country. “If these efforts succeed, we will welcome the outcome, since unity is crucial for addressing the country's challenges,” he said.

He acknowledged that Ter-Petrosyan’s initiative may not succeed, but emphasized that the ANC would continue its political struggle. “If the first president’s efforts succeed, we will fight together. If not, we will continue our struggle, because we have our own vision for Armenia’s future governance and a plan for leading the country out of the current situation,” Zurabyan added.
