Armenia moves to extend mandatory insurance to mopeds and quadricycles

The Armenian parliament is weighing legislation to mandate Compulsory Motor Third Party Liability (CMTPL) insurance for mopeds, tricycles, and quadricycles following a surge in their use in the country.

Deputy Interior Minister Armen Ghazaryan told lawmakers on Tuesday that more than 2,500 two-wheeled mopeds, 30 three-wheeled mopeds, and over 120 tricycles and quadricycles are currently registered. He presented draft amendments to the law on compulsory civil liability insurance for motor vehicles during the first parliamentary reading on Tuesday.

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Defense and Security has endorsed the bill. Its deputy chair Armen Khachatryan urged colleagues to support the measure. Ghazaryan clarified that the obligation to insure will rest with the owners of the vehicles.
