Armenia to face summer water cuts

Armenia’s Water Committee has confirmed that planned water supply interruptions will take place during the summer months, though officials say the duration of cuts may be reduced.

Committee chairman Aramazd Ghalamkaryan told lawmakers on Tuesday that the government has requested two weeks to work with Veolia Jur, the country’s water operator, to revise the supply schedule. He said early assessments suggest the timetable could be improved.

According to Ghalamkaryan, two factors will help ease shortages: ongoing capital works designed to save water, and newly identified sources that will be connected to Yerevan more quickly with extra investment.

Residents in several districts of the capital have already faced night-time outages. Ghalamkaryan explained that while water cuts are unavoidable during peak summer demand, the current seven-hour nightly shutdowns could be shortened to three or four hours.

He stressed that night-time interruptions are necessary to refill reservoirs, ensuring daytime supply across the city.
