Armenian MP claims government's security measures out of step with modern threats

Most of the Armenian government initiatives aimed at strengthening national security fail to reflect today’s security realities, opposition lawmaker Tigran Abrahamyan says.

In a social media post on Wednesday, Abrahamyan, a member of the Pativ Unem faction, warned that a “new regional explosion” unfolding in Armenia’s immediate neighborhood represents a growing consolidation of threats, risks and uncertainties for the country.

Citing the Russia-Ukraine war as well as ongoing hostilities involving Iran, Abrahamyan questioned which deterrence mechanisms and preventive strategies remain effective and what types of military forces are actually capable of delivering results in today’s environment.

“Although the scale differs, the emergence of new approaches to warfare, evolving tactics and the kinds of forces being deployed provide grounds for comparison in Armenia’s case as well,” he wrote. “This enables us to assess the threats around us, understand the risks we may face and determine how to overcome them with minimal losses.”

According to Abrahamyan, the majority of the government’s security-related initiatives do not adequately address modern challenges.

“Funds are being allocated, but their effectiveness and alignment with the current realities are, to put it mildly, highly questionable,” the MP added.
