Armenian political analyst criticizes ruling party’s remarks

Armenian political analyst Suren Surenyants on Wednesday criticized recent remarks by Civil Contract faction leader Hayk Konjoryan, describing them as part of a broader pattern of confrontational rhetoric by the ruling party.

Speaking from the floor of the National Assembly, Konjoryan addressed businessman and opposition figure Gagik Tsarukyan and the Prosperous Armenia Party, referring to the “Noah’s Ark” initiative as a potential “Trojan horse.” He suggested the project may have been established for political purposes and could face scrutiny under processes related to the seizure of allegedly illegally acquired property.

In response, Surenyants said such statements reflect a recurring tactic in the government’s political messaging.

“When substantive arguments are lacking, political discourse shifts to labels, metaphors and public accusations,” Surenyants wrote. He argued that raising legal suspicions from the parliamentary podium risks blurring the line between political debate and judicial process.

“The National Assembly is not a courtroom,” he wrote, adding that any concerns regarding property ownership should be addressed through formal legal procedures based on evidence and due process. Public comments that appear to prejudge potential legal outcomes, he said, set a troubling precedent.

Surenyants also contended that in recent years the ruling party has frequently framed prominent opposition initiatives as hidden threats or attempts to restore the former political system. He described this approach as a pre-emptive effort to discredit political rivals before substantive competition unfolds.

Referring to Tsarukyan, Surenyants noted the businessman’s long-standing presence in Armenia’s political and public life, including involvement in social initiatives, educational and sports programs, and job creation.

According to Surenyants, governments confident in their performance and public backing do not typically rely on persistent labelling in political debate. He characterized Konjoryan’s remarks as a sign of political unease rather than a substantive policy critique.
