Armenian archbishop released from custody

The Yerevan Criminal Court of Appeals on Thursday ordered the immediate release of Archbishop Arshak Khachatryan, the chancellor of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, his lawyer Arsen Babayan reported.

Khachatryan was placed in pre-trial detention for two months on 5 December. His detention was extended by two more months on 3 February.

He is accused of arranging the placement of drugs on a demonstrator at a 2018 protest against Catholicos Karekin II.

The senior cleric has denied any wrongdoing, calling the charges politically motivated.
