Armenia grants monument status to nine newly discovered cultural sites

Armenia’s Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports has conferred official monument status on nine newly discovered historical and cultural sites following expert commission approval.

The new entries include a 1956 residential building on Mashtots Avenue in Yerevan, a 20th-century relief sculpture and World War II memorial in Masis, two 17th-century bridges in the village of Lichk, the 1984 Homeland Memorial in the village of Itsakar, the petroglyph complex and burial field in Ishkhanasar dating back to the 2nd-1st millennium BC and the Yenokavan-1 and Yenokavan-2 cave dwellings in Tavush Province spanning Mesolithic to medieval eras.

The commission also reviewed protective zoning projects for several existing monuments, including Ashtarak’s historic cemetery, the 7th-century Holy Mother of God Church, the Perch Proshyan House-Museum and other sites in Aragatsotn, Gegharkunik, Lori, Kotayk and Syunik Provinces. Approved plans will be coordinated with local authorities before final confirmation by the minister.
