Secular members of Armenia's Supreme Spiritual Council questioned, lawyer says

Secular members of Armenia’s Supreme Spiritual Council were questioned by investigators on Thursday, prompting accusations of government interference in the internal affairs of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

Human rights lawyer Ruben Melikyan, who attended the questioning of two council members, said others were also summoned as witnesses. He noted that the interrogations were scheduled at the same time as a council session, effectively preventing the body from meeting.

“In essence, this was another intervention in the Mother See’s internal matters. The authorities are not leaving the church alone and continue their unlawful actions,” Melikyan wrote on Facebook.
