Armenian parliament speaker calls Aliyev's peace remarks 'very positive'

Armenian National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan has praised Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s recent comments on peace as “very positive”, underscoring that the two countries are moving toward normalization and trade.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Simonyan rejected opposition claims that the ruling Civil Contract party was using the threat of war to sway voters. He argued that if political forces in Armenia sought to alter national borders, conflict could become unavoidable, but stressed that the government’s course is directed toward stability.

“We have agreed with Aliyev that there will be peace, we will engage in trade and we are moving forward on that path,” Simonyan said, stressing that Armenia must remain strong to avoid vulnerability and accused opposition parties of seeking confrontation.

Simonyan stressed the importance of confidence in Armenia’s own actions and institutions, pointing out that skepticism over peace persisted until border incidents and fatalities ceased.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to finalizing a peace agreement with Azerbaijan.
