Armenian opposition figure criticizes government, cites regional security and economic gaps

Armenian opposition figure Narek Karapetyan on Saturday criticized the country’s leadership over shortcomings in economic management and national security, contrasting Armenia’s trajectory with developments in neighboring Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Karapetyan made the remarks during a visit by members of the Strong Armenia party to the southern community of Agarak in Syunik Province, where they met with local supporters.

Speaking at the gathering, he outlined the economic and security agenda of businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan, whom the party has presented as a prospective candidate for prime minister. He framed the political choice facing Armenians as one between stability and what he characterized as ineffective governance.

“We must decide what kind of future we want for our country,” he said. “Do we want a secure state with balanced leadership, or one that repeatedly draws attention in ways that raise concern rather than confidence?”

Without naming Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan directly, Karapetyan made a pointed reference to a recent incident involving him and members of his Civil Contract party eating corn on a bus, using it as a symbol of unserious leadership during a period of significant regional changes.

He argued that Turkey is expanding its naval and technological capabilities and developing transport links toward Asia, while Azerbaijan is strengthening ties with Turkey, investing in infrastructure, and building up its economy and military capacity.

“In the context of these serious global changes, we must ask what we are doing,” Karapetyan said, suggesting Armenia is falling behind its neighbors.

Karapetyan also addressed Samvel Karapetyan’s entry into politics, saying the businessman could have remained outside public life but chose to engage due to mounting national challenges, including security concerns and economic pressures.

He further criticized the government’s economic record, stating that Armenia’s public debt has risen sharply in recent years, stating it reflects weaknesses in governance and the need for political change.

“This indicates that the current leadership is not fully in control of the situation,” he said. “A change of power is necessary.”

Karapetyan concluded by emphasizing that citizens of a strong Armenia should not have to live in poverty, presenting economic development and security as key pillars of the party’s platform.
