Armenia hit by heavy rain and snow amid powerful cyclone

Armenia has been battered by intense rainfall and snow after a powerful cyclone moved in from the south late last week, officials say.

The peak of the storm came on 27–28 March, bringing widespread precipitation across the country. In mountainous areas, snow and sleet dominated, while valleys and lowlands saw heavy rain.

Southern Syunik Province was hardest hit. In Kapan, 47mm of rain fell in a single day – about three quarters of the city’s average monthly rainfall for March. Other towns in the province recorded between 15mm and 32mm.

Between 27 and 30 March, rainfall across Armenia ranged from 15mm to 25mm, with Syunik seeing up to 49mm. In the capital Yerevan, 19–22mm was recorded, including 8–9mm in just one hour on 30 March morning – classed as torrential rain.

The Environment Ministry said the episode highlighted how quickly and intensely climate processes can unfold in the region.
