RPA ready to lead post-election struggle in Armenia, Sargsyan says

Former Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan says that his Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) is prepared to spearhead post-election protests if the ruling Civil Contract party holds onto power through unfair practices.

Speaking at the party’s 18th congress on Saturday, Sargsyan accused the government of trampling constitutional norms and national values to preserve its rule. He warned that the current leadership had already brought war to Armenia and could do so again, insisting that accountability must follow.

“The war was brought by you and you are ready to bring it again. Those who bring war must reap what they sow – at minimum through a change of power, at maximum through legal accountability,” Sargsyan said.

He sharply criticized Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, alleging that the government was reshaping Armenia’s constitution to suit Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. Sargsyan argued that the authorities were presenting Armenians with a false choice between “fear and evil”, while alternatives such as a stronger negotiating team, new security strategy and balanced alliances were possible.

Speaking about possible political developments after elections, Sargsyan said: “If impeachment does not take place and the regime once again seizes power under unequal conditions, misusing administrative resources and other unacceptable methods, the Republican Party is ready to take its place in the frontlines of the post-election struggle.”
