Former Armenian FM says united opposition could drive broad political overhaul

Former Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian claims the country stands at a critical political juncture ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections, arguing that a coordinated opposition effort could lead not only to a change of power, but also to a comprehensive political transformation.

In a statement posted on Facebook on Friday, Oskanian described the elections as a decisive moment for Armenia, citing widespread public disillusionment and uncertainty stemming from years of national challenges, losses and governance failures.

At the same time, he noted the emergence of several opposition alliances that he said are credible, experienced and capable of governance. These blocs, he added, could secure a clear parliamentary majority either independently or through cooperation.

Oskanian argued that the opposition’s objective should extend beyond preventing Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s party from retaining a parliament majority. Instead, he stressed efforts should focus on ensuring the ruling party fails to cross the electoral threshold required to enter parliament.

“These elections are about translating the genuine sentiments of society into a clear political outcome,” Oskanian said, pointing to a dissatisfied electorate and a broader recognition that the current trajectory is untenable.

If opposition forces and voters act with clarity and purpose, he said the result could be “not merely a change in government, but a fundamental and comprehensive political restructuring.”

He added that the vote offers a chance not only to replace the current leadership but also to close a deeply challenging chapter in Armenia’s recent history and to initiate a new phase defined by accountability, competence and national renewal.
