Iran-U.S. talks in Islamabad could signal new regional reality, analyst says

Direct talks between Iran and the United States, set to begin in Islamabad, could mark a pivotal moment for the Middle East, according to regional analyst Varuzhan Geghamyan. He described the negotiations as “difficult to overstate” in importance, noting that while a swift resolution is unlikely, the process itself signals a potential strategic shift.

Geghamyan emphasized the stature of the Iranian delegation, highlighting the presence of senior economic officials, including the head of Iran’s Central Bank. He suggested their inclusion indicates that Tehran is approaching the talks with seriousness and that the agenda may extend well beyond security concerns.

“Iran appears to view these negotiations not only as a chance to reduce military tensions, but as an opportunity to formalize a new strategic reality in which it assumes a dominant role in the Middle East,” Geghamyan wrote. He added that Iranian officials may also be seeking meaningful relief from international economic sanctions, leveraging recent geopolitical developments to secure tangible gains.

“If that is the case, the region could face an entirely new and unprecedented situation,” he said, pledging to continue monitoring developments as the talks progress.
