Armenia foils attempt to smuggle large quantity of cigarettes at Iran border crossing

Armenian customs officials have prevented an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of undeclared cigarettes through the Agarak border crossing with Iran, the State Revenue Committee reported.

A truck, which arrived from Iran in recent days, was subjected to inspection using X-ray scanning equipment. Analysis of the images raised suspicions of concealed tobacco products, prompting a more detailed search.

Customs officers discovered 18,520 packs of undeclared cigarettes hidden in multiple compartments, including overhead storage areas above the driver, side compartments intended for spare parts and beneath the vehicle’s mattress.

The cigarettes were seized and administrative proceedings were initiated against an Armenian citizen identified by the initials E.V. under Article 316 of the country’s customs regulations.

Materials related to the case have been forwarded to the relevant department of the State Revenue Committee for further action.

The authorities urged citizens to comply with customs regulations and avoid attempting to transport undeclared goods across the border.
