Analyst warns Armenia risks international scandal over Olympic Committee interference

A high-profile legal dispute over the leadership of Armenia’s National Olympic Committee (NOC) has escalated into a political controversy, with analysts warning of potential international repercussions.

In a social media post on Tuesday, political analyst Suren Surenyants claimed the lawsuit seeking to strip Gagik Tsarukyan of his NOC presidency, formally filed by the Weightlifting Federation, amounts to  political interference rather than a routine legal matter. The federation is chaired by Arayik Harutyunyan, who also serves as the prime minister’s chief of staff, raising concerns that the government is exerting direct influence over an autonomous sports body.

“The involvement of a senior government official in efforts to alter the leadership of the Olympic Committee is a dangerous precedent,” Surenyants wrote, arguing that such actions amount to “crude state intervention” in sports.

The International Olympic Committee’s charter requires national committees to operate free from government control. Breaches of this principle have previously triggered sanctions, including suspension of recognition. Surenyants warned that Armenia’s case could evolve into a “full-scale international scandal” if the IOC concludes that political pressure is undermining the independence of the NOC.

The controversy comes as Armenia seeks to strengthen its standing in global sports. Tsarukyan was recently elected president of the Eurasian Sports Cooperation Association, a move that placed Armenia in the spotlight of international sporting circles. Analysts say the government’s actions risk undermining those gains.

“This is not a legal process in substance,” Surenyants said. “It is political interference, fraught with international consequences that could destabilize Armenia’s sports system both domestically and abroad.”
