Kocharyan says TRIPP no longer viable

Former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan said the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) initiative is no longer viable in practice, casting doubt on its geopolitical relevance following recent regional developments.

Speaking on the Big Politics podcast on Thursday, Kocharyan argued that the framework faces “serious uncertainty”, adding that the latest war has exposed fundamental weaknesses in its feasibility.

“I do not see any practical implementation of TRIPP under the current circumstances,” he said.

Kocharyan warned that pursuing the initiative in its current form could strain relations with Iran, which he described as a critical regional partner. He suggested that the only workable alternative would be to expand the format to include major powers perceived as friendly by Tehran, such as Russia and China.

“Any other approach is problematic,” he said.

He also highlighted the strategic importance of Iran as a future transit hub, noting that a comprehensive resolution of sanctions could transform the country into the shortest and most efficient corridor linking Asia to Europe.

“China–Pakistan–Iran–Turkey–Europe would become the most direct route, bringing profound global changes,” Kocharyan said, urging the Armenian authorities to exercise caution in managing ties with Tehran.

“We must not take steps that could undermine relations built over decades,” he added, criticizing the current government for a pattern of damaging foreign partnerships.

Kocharyan further claimed that the Armenian authorities had sought public reassurances from the United States that TRIPP remains in force.

“It is not in force,” he said. “As a propaganda tool, perhaps yes — but in reality, no.”
