Opposition MP says Armenian government following Azerbaijani agenda

Opposition lawmaker Tigran Abrahamyan on Friday lambasted Armenia’s current leadership, accusing it of aligning with Azerbaijan’s agenda and undermining national security, particularly along the country’s borders.

In a statement posted on social media, Abrahamyan, secretary of the Pativ Unem faction, argued that the absence of recent incidents along the border should not be interpreted as a sign of stability or effective governance.

“The reason no incidents are being recorded at the border is because you have fully accepted the Azerbaijani agenda and are moving along the path of its implementation,” he wrote.

Abrahamyan also took aim at remarks made by a deputy speaker of parliament, who had credited the government’s “established peace” for the current lack of fatalities at the border, contrasting it with previous years when dozens of deaths were recorded annually.

Rejecting that characterization, Abrahamyan accused the authorities of hypocrisy, pointing to a series of military and security failures during their tenure.

“During your eight years in power, there have been six or seven wars and acts of aggression against Armenia and Artsakh, largely as a result of your adventurist policies,” he said, adding that these developments led to the occupation of various parts of Armenian territory and the deaths of thousands.

He further criticized the government’s stance during the 2023 Azerbaijani offensive against Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), stressing that it had assumed a passive role.

“The leaders who recognized Artsakh as part of Azerbaijan are now speaking about internal processes there or whether there was resistance,” Abrahamyan wrote.

In addition, he raised concerns about conditions within Armenia’s armed forces, claiming that deaths continue to occur even in non-combat situations.

“Today, a large number of soldiers are dying in peacetime conditions because, under the guise of reforms, you have pursued a path of demoralization and disintegration of the army,” he said.

The Armenian government has not immediately responded to Abrahamyan’s remarks.
