Armenia braces for flood risk amid heavy rains

Armenia’s Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center has issued a stark warning of adverse water surges in rivers in Vedi, Azat, and Vayots Dzor Provinces. The alert follows forecasts of intense rainfall and rapid snowmelt expected between 20 and 21 April, which could significantly swell river flows and trigger hazardous conditions.

In Yerevan, showers and thunderstorms are anticipated from 20-25 April, with the heaviest downpours forecast for 20-21 April. Wind gusts during storms may reach 15-18 m/s, raising concerns over localized damage. While 22 April and several nights thereafter are predicted to be dry, intermittent rain and thunder will persist across much of the country.

Mountainous regions face an additional threat, as precipitation is likely to fall as wet snow during night and morning hours on 21-22 April. Temperatures are expected to climb by 5-7C between 22 and 24 April, potentially accelerating snowmelt and compounding flood risks.
