Armenian parliament speaker hails 'productive meetings' in Turkey

Armenian National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan said he held “productive meetings” in Turkey as part of his recent visit.

Speaking at an event marking Citizen’s Day in Yerevan on Saturday, Simonyan condemned the burning of a Turkish flag during an April 23 torchlight march, calling the act “petty, weak, and harmful to Armenia and the Armenian people.” He stressed that Armenia’s foreign policy is guided by state interests rather than symbolic gestures.

Simonyan confirmed that discussions in Turkey included a proposal to establish a parliamentary framework involving Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. He suggested such cooperation could pave the way for border openings, increased trade and improved economic conditions for citizens.

On reports that Azerbaijan has demolished Stepanakert’s Holy Mother of God Cathedral, Simonyan said the authorities were still verifying the information before issuing an official response.
