Gyumri mayor’s son remanded in custody

Spartak Ghukasyan, the son of jailed Gyumri Mayor Vardan Ghukasyan, has been remanded in custody for three months, prosecutors confirmed to 1lurer.am on Wednesday.

The decision followed a petition by prosecutors for an extraordinary hearing, moving up a review that had originally been scheduled for next month.

Attorney Hovhannes Gharakeshishyan said the session took place without Ghukasyan’s lawyers present. “We received notice of the hearing but informed the court we could not attend it due to workload,” he told reporters.

Ghukasyan was charged in November 2025 under Article 297 of Armenia’s Criminal Code, covering group hooliganism committed through the use of information or communication technologies.
