Armenian Defense Ministry explains military emblem change

Armenia’s Defense Ministry has confirmed the adoption of a redesigned army emblem, citing the need to correct heraldic and symbolic flaws in the insignia first introduced in 2001.

In a video released on Wednesday, the ministry said the overhaul was part of broader military transformation efforts. Officials argued that the previous emblem’s depiction of an eagle was “incomplete and vulnerable,” with a closed beak, missing body and talons, and a sword positioned behind the shield — all elements interpreted as signs of passivity and lack of readiness.

The new insignia features a fully rendered eagle with open beak, extended wings and visible talons, symbolizing vigilance and combat readiness. Behind the eagle radiates a golden sun, representing vitality and continuity, while its chest bears a circular shield adorned with an Armenian eight-pointed cross and seed motif, described as a metaphor for future generations of soldiers.

The eagle clutches a sword in one claw and the Holy Cross of King Ashot II the Iron in the other, underscoring perpetual preparedness and historical continuity. Above the design, Armenia’s tricolor flag and national map anchor the emblem to statehood.

The ministry said the redesign “embodies the mission of the Armed Forces to defend Armenia’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity,” adding that military reforms are underway.
