Analyst links Trump's endorsement of Pashinyan to Central Asia energy ambitions

U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly endorsed Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan ahead of the June 7 parliamentary elections, describing him as a “great friend and leader” and signaling Washington’s growing interest in regional transport and energy projects in the South Caucasus.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump praised Pashinyan for making Armenia “strong, wealthy, and very secure,” while emphasizing a shared vision of “peace and prosperity” for Armenia and the wider South Caucasus region.

Trump also referenced recent diplomatic engagement between the United States and Armenia, saying U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had traveled to Armenia and advanced “important deals” between the two countries.

According to Trump, the United States and Armenia will soon break ground the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP), a proposed regional initiative aimed at expanding trade and energy connectivity from Central Asia through the South Caucasus and toward Western markets.

“For these reasons, Nikol has my complete and total endorsement for re-election on June 7, 2026,” Trump wrote.

Commenting on his remarks, political analyst Suren Sargsyan said the statement marked a departure from the traditional approach of U.S. presidents toward foreign elections.

“U.S. presidents have generally been cautious about intervening in elections abroad or openly backing specific candidates,” Sargsyan said. “Even when support existed, it was usually expressed indirectly and diplomatically, as under former presidents Barack Obama or George W. Bush.”

He added that Trump’s endorsement resembled the type of direct political backing commonly seen in U.S. domestic politics.

Sargsyan also argued that Trump’s comments underscored the strategic importance Washington places on regional transit corridors and access to Central Asian energy resources through the South Caucasus.
