Armenia's Ambred Fortress reopens to visitors after extended closure

The road leading to Ambred Fortress, one of Armenia’s most significant medieval landmarks, has reopened after an extended closure, with the historic site set to welcome visitors again starting June 2.

Armenia’s Preservation Service said the Ambred historical and cultural complex will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Major restoration and conservation work has been underway at the site since 2024. Authorities said excavation, earth-removal and structural stabilization efforts have already been carried out, while additional restoration work is expected to continue for the next two to three years. Visitors will still be able to access the monument during that period, although the citadel will remain temporarily closed for safety reasons.

The Armenian government has allocated nearly 500 million drams for the restoration of the medieval fortress.

Perched on the southern slopes of Mount Aragats, Ambred dates back to the 7th century and became a key military stronghold of the Bagratid Kingdom by the 10th century. The fortress was captured and largely destroyed by Mongol forces in 1236 before being rebuilt in later years. It gradually lost its strategic importance after the late 14th century and was eventually abandoned.

Today, Ambred ranks among Armenia’s most visited cultural heritage sites, drawing an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 visitors each year.
