Armenian opposition MP criticizes government's shift toward Turkey, Azerbaijan

An Armenian opposition lawmaker has accused the government of signaling Turkey and Azerbaijan as alternatives to Russia in trade and economic cooperation, warning that such a move could undermine national interests.

Writing on social media on Monday, Tigran Abrahamyan, a member of the Pativ Unem faction, said the government’s approach risks downplaying the history of conflict with the two neighbors. “It creates the impression that Turkey and Azerbaijan have not committed military crimes against the Armenian people,” he stressed.

Abrahamyan questioned whether borders had been opened, peace treaties signed, or Azerbaijani troops withdrawn from Armenian territory. He cautioned that granting Turkey and Azerbaijan decisive roles in infrastructure and economic sectors would inevitably lead to political influence.

He added that the government might later justify concessions by claiming Russia had forced Armenia into them.
