Strong Armenia member thanks supporters after parliamentary elections

Narek Karapetyan, a senior member of the opposition Strong Armenia party, thanked supporters after Sunday’s parliamentary elections where his party finished second.

“Dear compatriots, hundreds of thousands of citizens, thank you for fighting like lions,” Karapetyan said in a message voters.

Karapetyan also expressed gratitude to hundreds of party members and supporters currently in detention.

“They were unlawfully arrested so that Civil Contract could carry out its activities during the electoral process,” he said. “Thanks to you, the Armenian nation can ensure its ability to defend itself.”

Karapetyan, who headed the opposition party’s electoral list, said Strong Armenia would issue a statement after the final election results are officially certified.

Armenia had 2,507,216 registered voters. A total of 1,477,736 people cast ballots, representing voter turnout of 58.94%.

Based on the latest official results, votes were distributed as follows:

• Civil Contract party: 727,827 votes (49.825%)
• Strong Armenia alliance: 340,088 votes (23.281%)
• Hayastan alliance: 145,113 votes (9.934%)
• Prosperous Armenia Party: 58,378 votes (3.996%)

A total of 16 parties and two electoral alliances ran for seats in the National Assembly.
