Armenian opposition MP urges strategic approach to parliamentary mandates after elections

Armenian opposition lawmaker Tigran Abrahamyan has urged political parties to base decisions on accepting parliamentary mandates on strategic considerations and clearly defined objectives, rather than frustration over the election outcome.

Abrahamyan, secretary of the opposition Pativ Unem faction in the National Assembly, said parties that failed to win the elections but secured representation in parliament face a particularly challenging political moment.

“This is undeniably a challenging situation for opposition forces that haven't achieved victory in the elections but have entered parliament,” the MP wrote on Facebook on Tuesday.

He noted that public expectations surrounding the elections and the disappointment expressed by many voters were understandable. However, he stressed that political leaders must respond with careful judgment and a well-defined course of action.

“At this pivotal moment, political forces and their leaders must rely on clear-eyed judgment and set out a well-defined course of action,” Abrahamyan said.

“The question of taking up or rejecting parliament seats should be determined by a clear understanding of future actions and priorities, not by internal disappointment or various interpretations,” he added.

Armenia held parliamentary elections on Sunday. Preliminary results showed Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s Civil Contract party leading with 49.81% of the vote. The Strong Armenia alliance placed second with 23.29%, followed by the Hayastan bloc with 9.94%. The Prosperous Armenia Party narrowly fell short of the 4% threshold required for parliamentary representation, receiving 58,378 votes, or 3.996%.
