Strong earthquake strikes Azerbaijan, tremors felt in Armenia

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Azerbaijan on Wednesday afternoon, shaking areas near the city of Sheki and rattling parts of Armenia.

The quake hit at 3:13 p.m. local time (11:13 GMT), Armenia’s Seismic Protection Service reported. Its epicenter was located about 52 kilometers southeast of Sheki and at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Officials said the epicentral zone experienced shaking of up to 7 on the seismic intensity scale. In Armenia, the tremors were felt in Tavush, Gegharkunik and Syunik Provinces, where residents reported shaking measuring 3 to 4 in intensity.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
