Armenian opposition MP warns Baku is advancing 'Western Azerbaijan' narrative

Armenian opposition lawmaker Tigran Abrahamyan on Saturday accused Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s government of suppressing discussion of Artsakh while Azerbaijan actively promotes the so-called “Western Azerbaijan” narrative.

“What is forbidden to Armenians is encouraged for Azerbaijanis,” he wrote on Facebook, adding that the Armenian government is attempting to close not only the chapter on Artsakh but also discussion of the issue itself.

Abrahamyan said Azerbaijani officials have made clear that the concept of “Western Azerbaijan” is a long-term strategic objective and continue to advance it through official statements, public messaging and other channels.

He also pointed to maps displayed in Azerbaijani military units that depict Armenia’s Syunik and Vayots Dzor Provinces, as well as parts of Gegharkunik and Tavush Provinces, as Azerbaijani territory.

“More broadly, Armenia itself is portrayed as ‘Western Azerbaijan,’” the MP said.
