Opposition groups mount unprecedented legal challenge to Armenian election results

Seven political parties and alliances that participated in Armenia’s June 7 parliamentary elections have formally challenged the results before the Constitutional Court, marking what opposition figures describe as an unprecedented development in the country’s electoral history.

According to opposition representative Edgar Ghazaryan of the Strong Armenia alliance, the petitioners account for 39% of the 18 political forces that contested the election. Collectively, the seven groups received 634,876 votes, representing approximately 43% of all ballots cast.

“This is unprecedented in the history of Armenia’s electoral system,” Ghazaryan said in a statement on Saturday, arguing that the scale of the legal challenge reflects widespread dissatisfaction among opposition forces regarding the official outcome.

Notably, nearly all major political groups opposed to the current government have joined the appeal, with the exception of the National Democratic Pole Party, the Armenian National Congress and the Bright Armenia Party.

Ghazaryan noted that since the 2018 change of power, only the results of the 2018 snap parliamentary elections were not contested in court. By contrast, the outcome of the 2021 snap parliamentary elections was challenged by four political forces, a figure that was itself considered unprecedented at the time.
