Mahmoud Kalari to chair Golden Apricot regional competition jury

Renowned Iranian cinematographer Mahmoud Kalari has been named president of the jury for the Regional Competition at the upcoming Golden Apricot International Film Festival in Yerevan. The festival organizers confirmed the appointment on Tuesday, highlighting Kalari’s pivotal role in shaping modern Iranian cinema.

Kalari, whose career spans more than four decades, has worked on over 60 films since the 1980s. His collaborations include some of the most celebrated works of Iranian cinema, such as Asghar Farhadi’s A Separation, Jafar Panahi’s Offside, Dariush Mehrjui’s Leila, and Abbas Kiarostami’s The Wind Will Carry Us. His photography has also been exhibited internationally, cementing his reputation as one of the leading visual artists of his generation.

The Golden Apricot festival has long been a showcase for Iranian masters, welcoming Abbas Kiarostami, Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Jafar Panahi and Asghar Farhadi. Kalari’s presence continues this tradition, offering Armenian audiences the chance to engage with a filmmaker who has helped bring many of their works to life.

The 23rd edition of the festival will run from 12–19 July 2026, presenting both competition and non-competition programs. Films from across the globe, including selections from Cannes, Berlin and other leading festivals, will be screened.
