A violent altercation broke out during a Yerevan City Council meeting on Tuesday, leaving an opposition member with an eye injury after what he described as a coordinated assault.
Sargis Ter-Yesayan, a councilor from the Mother Armenia faction, accused ruling party members of instigating the melee. “We were only three men standing and they attacked us with a hundred, like predators,” he said, alleging that security personnel were instructed to strike opposition figures.
The clash followed the detention of Mother Armenia leader Andranik Tevanyan on charges of high treason, which Ter-Yesayan denounced as unlawful. He further accused the ruling Civil Contract party of betraying national interests, citing the surrender of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) and the heavy toll of the conflict. “You are the traitors of the state, the ones who surrendered Artsakh. You are responsible for 5,000 deaths,” he said.
