Azerbaijan sets new precondition in talks with Armenia, opposition says
Azerbaijan has introduced a new demand in its negotiations with Armenia, claims Mariana Ghahramanyan, spokesperson for the opposition Strong Armenia party.
In a social media post on Wednesday, she said that Baku is now pressing for recognition of what it calls the “right of return” for so‑called “Western Azerbaijanis.”
The announcement followed remarks by Aziz Alekberli, head of the so-called “Western Azerbaijani Community” and a member of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis, who insisted that the issue of return to "ancestral lands" must be incorporated into the peace agenda. Alekberli argued that without this provision, “it will be difficult to speak of lasting peace in the region.”
“This statement once again lays bare Baku’s true intentions and makes it clear that Armenia’s current leadership is not honest with the people, concealing the reality from them," Ghahramanyan said.
