Armenian opposition member's detention eased to house arrest

Armenia’s Anti-Corruption Court on Thursday replaced the detention of opposition politician Artur Avanesyan with house arrest, amid ongoing proceedings over alleged vote-buying ahead of the June 7 parliamentary elections.

Avanesyan, a member of the Strong Armenia party, told reporters the measure remained unacceptable, insisting he should be “in full liberty.” He dismissed a committee-released audio recording as unrelated to election campaigning, claiming it dated back to February.

Prosecutors accuse Avanesyan of offering inducements to voters in exchange for support, including promises of military posts, employment, land and housing. According to the indictment, he allegedly made such offers during phone conversations in March with two citizens registered in separate constituencies.

When asked whether the opposition should take parliament seats, Avanesyan replied, “It is not yet the time for mandates; there is still action to be taken.” He declined further political commentary, joking that additional remarks might lead to renewed detention.
