Armenian opposition accuses government of fighting against majority amid court challenge

Arman Abovyan, a member of the opposition Prosperous Armenia Party, has accused the authorities of defying the will of the majority of Armenian citizens as the Constitutional Court is hearing opposition appeals to annul the results of the June 7 parliamentary elections.

Speaking to reporters outside the court on Saturday, Abovyan said the opposition’s actions remain strictly aligned with Armenia’s Constitution and laws. He dismissed speculation about “Plan B, C, D, or E,” insisting that the opposition’s response will evolve dynamically depending on developments.

“We expect only one thing from the Constitutional Court – to make a decision aligned with the Constitution, not under political influence,” Abovyan said, adding the current situation has forced the opposition to hope the court will act independently of government pressure.

Abovyan argued that public discontent cannot be measured solely by the number of people in street rallies, pointing instead to widespread anger over “brazen violations” during the vote and the Central Electoral Commission’s decisions.

“The authorities must understand they are fighting not against individual political forces, but against the majority of citizens who did not vote for them,” he said, claiming the government did not actually secure the votes it officially reported.

He recalled that Prosperous Armenia was the first to call for opposition unity after alleging its ballots were destroyed. “This is not about parliament seats. When Armenian citizens’ interests are ignored, the country’s security is also undermined,” Abovyan warned.
