Armenian opposition urges court to annul June election results

Opposition parties on Wednesday pressed the Constitutional Court to annul the results of the June 7 parliamentary elections, arguing that widespread irregularities undermined the legitimacy of the vote.

Liparit Drmeyan, a member of the Wings of Unity party, delivered closing remarks in a case that consolidated challenges from seven political groups. He described the hearings as “unprecedented, not only in the number of petitioners but also in the scope of evidence and documentation presented.”

Drmeyan asserted that opposition groups had introduced “substantiated and irrefutable” proof of violations, while the ruling Civil Contract party sought to dismiss or downplay each allegation. He maintained that the cumulative effect of the irregularities left “no reasonable doubt” that the outcome was compromised.

“If we listen to those who argue the violations were insufficient to justify annulment, the question arises: how many violations would be enough to alter the results?” Drmeyan asked, adding that no definitive number could be set.

He argued that the evidence demonstrated the elections “did not take place under conditions of equality and freedom,” alleging that the process was repeatedly and systematically breached. “It has become clear that to win elections, you need to commit all the acts prohibited by the Electoral Code,” he said.

Drmeyan underscored that the court’s ruling would be pivotal for Armenia’s democratic trajectory, adding, “Your decision is crucial for the future of democracy in Armenia.”

The Wings of Unity party has formally petitioned the Constitutional Court to invalidate the June 7 election results and order a new vote.
