Political analyst says Armenian election outcome weakened national sovereignty

Armenian political analyst Stepan Danielyan claims Armenia's sovereignty has been weakened following the Constitutional Court's decision to uphold the results of the June 7 parliamentary elections, arguing that political power is concentrated in the hands of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Armenia’s Constitutional Court on Saturday rejected opposition demands to annul the official results of the June 7 parliamentary elections that gave victory to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s Civil Contract party.

In a statement posted on social media on Sunday, Danielyan argued that genuine popular sovereignty rests on three pillars: free and fair elections, government accountability to the public, and the protection of constitutional rights and freedoms.

"We do not have genuine elections," Danielyan said, alleging that "the actual election results do not correspond to the official ones." He also criticized the Constitutional Court for failing to overturn the outcome and said the public had not mounted a meaningful response.

Danielyan further argued that government institutions are no longer accountable to citizens but instead "to a single person, to whom they owe their appointments", referring to Pashinyan.

He also alleged that constitutional guarantees, including freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly and equality before the law, have been systematically undermined.

"As a result of the elections, the sovereignty of the Armenian people has collapsed and within the country the only sovereign is one person," Danielyan said.

He argued that Armenia's foreign policy is now shaped by "the perceptions and personal interests of one person," adding that the concentration of power leaves few institutional constraints on major state decisions.

"That one person can concede the country's interests, sovereignty or territory without facing any meaningful domestic checks," Danielyan said.

He stated that without a sovereign public capable of curbing external interference, Armenia has been reduced to a mere arena for foreign influence, stripped of the national immunity.
