Armenian university department head charged with bribery

Armenia’s Anti-Corruption Committee has charged the head of a department at Bryusov State University with accepting bribes in exchange for favoritism, the National Security Service said on Tuesday.

Investigators allege the official abused his position by arranging unsanctioned leave for two lecturers and reallocating their teaching hours to colleagues in return for cash payments in October 2025. He is also accused of accepting a gold ornament from a postgraduate student in December 2025 to ensure the smooth defense of the student’s dissertation.

The department head faces three counts of bribery under Armenia’s Criminal Code, while three lecturers who allegedly paid him have been charged with offering bribes. Authorities have suspended him from his post and imposed a travel ban pending trial.

The investigation has concluded and prosecutors have received the case file with a request to confirm the charges and forward it to court.
