Orange rainwater runoff in Kapan reported to Prosecutor's Office

Armenia’s Environmental and Mining Inspection Body has filed a report to the Prosecutor General’s Office following an incident in Kapan where heavy rains caused orange-colored rainwater runoff from a disused mine site.

The agency said it launched administrative proceedings on June 14 after torrential rains in Syunik Province led to discolored water flowing from the slopes near David Bek Street, adjacent to an inactive mine. Inspectors conducted aerial surveys and collected soil and water samples for laboratory testing.

Based on the findings, officials determined there were apparent signs of a criminal offense and referred the case to prosecutors.

Earlier, the Inspection Body had announced that the runoff originated from the Kavart mine area, raising concerns about potential environmental hazards in the city.
