HUMAN RIGHTS OMBUDSMAN DETAILS APPLICATION-COMPLAINTS

In the course of the recent three months, human rights ombudsman received 714 application-complaints, 304 of which in writing. Thirty-three of them are from groups of people comprising 1612 applicants, Armen Harutunyan, human rights ombudsman, presented such statistics today in a seminar dedicated to 56th anniversary of Human Rights International Day. In 1950, the General Assembly of U.N. adopted a resolution calling all nations to celebrate December 10 as the International Day of Human Rights.

“We are not satisfied with the conditions of human rights in our country today. Complaints are mainly on bad administration, idleness of public officials, lack of knowledge on laws and arbitrary interpretation and, even worse, discrimination,” the ombudsman said.

Harutunyan said sometimes officials do not give serious response in their letters. This mainly concerns the municipality which has given unsatisfactory replies to 90% of letter. The office of human rights ombudsman also managed to consider invalid one of mayor’s decisions which contradicted the law and violated property rights.

In terms of bad adminstration complaints are mainly addressed to general prosecutor’s office, cadaster and the police.
