Four major Armenian universities offering degrees in information technology, the USAID-funded Competitive Armenian Private Sector Project (CAPS) and the Union of Information Technology Enterprises (UITE) are pleased to announce Armenia’s first IT Career Fair. We invite your company’s active participation.
Where? Yerevan State University
When? Friday, 22 June 2007, all day
Why? ▪ To help firms identify the best of Armenia’s IT graduates
▪ To help IT graduates find the best jobs
Which companies can participate and how? Companies who anticipate concrete job openings before September 2007 can use this opportunity to locate the best candidates. The most appropriate participant from your company would be the person who manages human resources. If your company participates, you will prepare your own materials focusing on job openings and have at least one person available at your table throughout the day. In addition, your company may make short presentations to highlight your job openings and the benefits of working for your company.
Which students and graduates will participate? 4th and 5th year students, graduate students, and recent graduates from these universities will be invited to participate. These universities prepare the vast majority of Armenia’s IT graduates.
How will it work? In the large hall of Yerevan State, IT firms will set up tables with materials about their companies and job openings. Students can visit tables to drop off resumes and collect materials. Students may listen to short company presentations periodically during the day, and we hope to set up a space so companies can conduct initial screening interviews of the best candidates.
How will it be managed? Companies will register online, as will job seekers. Company names and profiles will be available online, as will a count of the number of job seekers registered.
How will students be prepared? Each university will meet with students beforehand and offer advice on preparing resumes and other job-seeking techniques. In addition to resumes, each participant will prepare a one-page summary that will help companies quickly identify their qualifications and skills.
My company is interested - where do I get additional information? As a first step, companies should send an email immediately to [email protected] to confirm interest and to provide the contact details of the primary liaison for this project. The next step is to fill in a short profile online on the Career Fair website: www.caps.am/itcareerfair.html. You will be asked to provide a company logo, short description of the company and list of job opening expected before September 2007. These profiles will appear on the website. Once you confirm you interest, one of the coordinators listed below will be your primary contact throughout the process.

Yerevan State University has a number of faculties related to IT such as Informatics and Applied Mathematics, Physics, Radiophysics and Mathematics. Both the bachelor and master programs taught in these faculties give the students an opportunity to gain both all the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge to become highly qualified specialists in the related areas. The graduates specialize in Mathematical Cybernetics, ECM Mathematical Support and Application of Means of Calculating Technology in the faculty of Informatics and Applied Mathematics, as well as Applied Mathematics and Physics in the faculty of Physics, and Actuarial Mathematics in the faculty of Mathematics. The programs include a wide range of topics as the software and hardware development and database management and the students are involved in different research projects which are sponsored by international and state grants. In 2006 there were more than 1800 students enrolled in IT programs. The number of graduates this year (both bachelors and masters) will be 646.

Slavonic University has more than 250 students enrolled in IT programs in the Department of Informatics and Applied Mathematics. In 2006, there were 27 graduates. The rigorous academic environment is complemented by a special laboratory on RFID and partnerships with a number of IT companies.

The American University of Armenia’s Computer Information Systems (CIS) program is an applied Master’s program to help students gain the necessary skills required to be productive leaders of the computing and related industries in Armenia. Students complete a broad training in the technical areas, as well as in business, management and entrepreneurship. The program also includes advanced topics such as distributed databases management systems. In addition to completing the core CIS course requirements, students are required to complete a Practicum course, as well as the culminating experience that consists of either an applied project or a thesis. Students are involved in open source projects and in projects from Stanford University. Students have access to state-of-the-art facilities and each student has a computer for personal use during the entire course of study. In 2007, the program will have 22 graduates.

There are four departments in the SEUA with IT programs, offering programs from Junior Engineer, Bachelor of Engineering, Master of Engineering and Research Engineer. The University has deep connections with Armenian IT companies, including Synopsys, Vivacell, Armentel, Web and Arminco. The Department of Computer Systems and Informatics has more than 100 students. This year, the department has 320 graduates, and 70 Masters. The department has close partnerships with many companies. The Department of Cybernetics trains specialists according to the Bachelor, Master, Research-Engineer programs. There are more than 1000 students in the Department. This year there are 210 graduates and 40 Master-specialists. The department is closely cooperating with the branch of the American Synopsys in Yerevan. The Department of Radio Engineering and Communication Systems carries out a multilevel training of engineering specialists. This year there are 188 graduates and 15 master- specialists. SEUA’s Department of Mathematics has 150 students in the Applied Mathematics and Informatics specialization. This year there are 36 graduates. The serious training in mathematics allows the students to master the Computer Science and Programming easily.

The USAID-funded CAPS Project provides technical assistance to the Armenian private sector to help them compete nationally, regionally and internationally. CAPS is currently working with the Armenian IT and tourism clusters. One component of CAPS is to strengthen the workforce available to companies, and to facilitate better links between education providers and firms.

UITE is a business association serving Armenia’s IT sector. The twenty one members include both small companies and multinationals operating in Armenia. UITE strives to consolidate industry issues for advocacy, facilitate business and undertake research in the ICT sector. UITE implements the annual DigiTec expo and assists IT companies in a number of other ways.
